Welcome Innsbruck - Winter 2019

I m Rahmen der dritten Winter World Masters Games (WWMG), die 2020 in Innsbruck stattfinden, werden nahezu alle olympischen Wintersportarten bestritten. Unter dem Motto „spirit together“ werden Sportler aus der ganzen Welt dazu eingeladen, die olympischen Werte Freundschaft, Leis- tung und Respekt zu leben.  Die World Masters Games haben ihre Wurzeln im Jahr 1985, die erste Sommeredition ging in Toronto (Kanada) über die Bühne. Die Winteredition geht nun in die dritte Runde: In der Region Innsbruck werden 2020 mehr als 3000 Sportler aus der ganzen Welt erwartet, die sich in zwölf Sportarten messen werden: Ski Alpin, Skibergsteigen, Curling, Eishockey, Eiskunst- lauf, Eisschnelllauf, Short Track, Biathlon, Langlauf, Nordische Kombination, Skispringen und Ski-Orientierungslauf stehen auf dem abwechslungsreichen Programm. Das harmonische Zusammenspiel zwischen pulsierendem Stadtleben und der großen Anzahl an Sportmöglichkeiten macht Innsbruck zu einem beliebten Austragungsort für Sportgroß- veranstaltungen. Viele der WWMG-Sportstätten wurden für die Olympischen Winterspiele 1964 und 1976 errichtet und seither laufend modernisiert. So war die geschichtsträchtige Olympi- aworld zuletzt Austragungsort der Eishockey-WM, der Hand- ball-EM und 2018 der Kletter-WM. Das dortige Areal fungiert während den WWMG 2020 als Sport- und Organisationszentrum sowie als Austragungsort der meisten Eissportbewerbe. Auch die Eishalle in Telfs wird für Eishockeymatches genutzt. Der als „Olympiaberg“ bekannte Patscherkofel ist mit der 2017 neu ge- bauten Bergbahn Austragungsort der alpinen Wettkämpfe. Die Bewerbe im Skibergsteigen werden rund um die Bergsteigerdör- fer des Skitourenparadieses Sellraintal abgehalten. Die berühmte Bergisel-Skisprungschanze wird während der Winter World Mas- ters Games 2020 nicht im Einsatz sein, kann von Sportlern und Begleitpersonen aber natürlich besichtigt werden. Wer möchte, kann sich sogar auf den Absprungbalken der Skispringer – den sogenannten Zitterbalken – setzen, und zwar im Rahmen einer speziellen Führung. Professionell mit Klettergurt gesichert, rutscht man auf den Zitterbalken und erlebt den atemberauben- den Blick von der Schanze wie ein echter Skispringer. Gesprun- gen wird natürlich nicht, aber der Adrenalinschub und das Herz- klopfen sind schon beim „Probesitzen“ enorm.   Als Stützpunkt für die nordischen Wettbewerbe fungiert die Olympiaregion Seefeld, die als eine der weltweit besten Langlaufdestinationen bekannt ist. Für die im Jahr 2019 dort ausgetragene Nordische WM wurde die Infrastruktur komplett erneuert und das Loipennetz großzügig ausgebaut. Seefeld wird zudem Austragungsort der Ski-Orientierungslauf-Bewerbe sein. In Kitzbühel wird um die Curling-Medaillen gekämpft. W INFOS UNTER WWW.INNSBRUCK2020.COM A lmost all the Olympic winter sports will be part of the third Winter World Masters Games (WWMG), which will take place in Innsbruck in 2020. With the slogan “spirit together”, athletes from all over the world will be invited to live the Olympic values of friendship, achievement and respect. The World Masters Games date back to 1985 when the first summer edition took place in Toronto (Canada). The winter version is now in its third round. More than 3000 athletes from all over the world are expected to compete in twelve different sports in the Innsbruck area in 2020. Alpine skiing, ski jumping & Nordic combined, ski mountaineering, biathlon, cross-country skiing, ski orienteering, figure skating, speed skating, short track, ice hockey and curling are all on the varied programme. The smooth integration between pulsating city life and the large number of sports facilities makes Innsbruck one of the most beautiful alpine city holiday destinations in the world. Many of the WWMG sports facilities were built for the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics and have been continuously mod- ernised ever since. The historic Olympiaworld was recently the venue for the Ice Hockey World Championships, the Hand- ball European Championships and the 2018 Climbing World Championships. During the WWMG 2020, the area will function as a sports and organisation centre as well as the venue for most ice sports competitions. The ice rink in Telfs will also be used for ice hockey matches. Known as the “Olympiaberg”, the Patscherkofel with the new mountain railway built in 2017 is the venue for the alpine competitions. The ski mountaineering competitions are held around the mountaineering villages of the Sellrain valley ski touring paradise. The famous Bergisel ski jump will not be used during the Winter World Masters Games 2020 but can of course be visited by athletes and their com- panions. If you wish, you can even sit on the jumping beam that the ski jumpers use - the so-called ‘shivering beam’ - as part of a special guided tour. Professionally secured with a climbing harness, you slide onto the beam and experience the breathtaking view from the jump just as a real ski jumper would. Of course, you don’t jump, but the adrenaline rush and palpitations are enormous when you try it out. The Olympiaregion Seefeld, which is known as one of the best cross-country skiing destinations in the world, serves as a base for the Nordic competitions. The infrastructure was completely overhauled for the Nordic World Championships, which were held there in 2019, and the cross-country ski trail network underwent a sizeable expansion.
