The cable car technology leaves little space for creativity in terms of size and ar- rangement of volumes. One of the biggest challenges was combining the logic of the cable car system with the other requirements for the buildings and designing the latter for the convenience of visitors. The design’s objective was developing clear and self-confident station buildings. The volumes were expected to preserve the appearance of technical buildings and thus to fit into the topography as typologically independent structures. When we saw the impressive natural scen- ery on location, it became clear to us that a sensational architectural language would be wrong, so we placed the mountain and the natural setting centre stage. All our designs are based on a simple but strong underlying idea, which then is consistently put into practice. With the Patscherkofelbahn, the appearance is characterized by functional, clearly structured vertical and horizontal elements. One the one hand, in relation to a building’s alignment and choice of materials, you have to be aware of the weather conditions, and on the other the architectural design should not be neglected either. The planning and construction period has become very much shorter over recent years, which is a challenge for everybody involved. Every mountain and every pro- ject has special qualities and peculiarities. The challenges can only be dealt with sensitively with individual solutions and a tailor-made pro- ject, developed in keeping with the location. Fortunately, we’ve been noticing an increasing awareness of a sophisticated design in cable car construction over recent years. The new cableway is meant to strengthen, or even renew, the identification of Innsbruckers with their landmark mountain. What matters, in this respect, is not so much the buildings but the experience on the mountain. I S T H E R E A P R I N C I P L E T H A T U N I T E S A L L Y O U R P R O - J E C T S ? What matters in all our projects is to find simple solutions for complex situations. The central motif at all times is the search for an architecture that creates intimate and lasting places by way of a laid-back everydayness. W
