hairman Erwin Auer and his assistants have achieved great

things throughout their years of detailed work. Not only the

scope but also the quality of the pieces of art exposed will

transport the visitor into a realm of sheer astonishment. This oeu-

vre resulted from the harmonious collaboration of different artists:

The carver (or sculptor), who creates the figures, the one who sets

it all up and the painter, who is responsible for the background. We

distinguish between the typical Tyrolean and the oriental nativity sce-

nes – the oriental nativity scenes are built according to the standards

of the Holy Land and they are decorated with palm trees and camels.

Setting up an oriental nativity scene is quite easy these days, as the

Holy Land is well known partly through images or as the result of per-

sonal observations. Then there are also the Neapolitan nativity sce-

nes, in which the holy scene takes place in the midst of the everyday

life of the people and therefore can’t be compared to the nativity sce-

nes known from Austria. They are also built from a different material,

which is mostly coloured and very detailed terracotta. Of course, baby

Jesus and the Madonna, who are worshipped in Naples, play an im-

portant role here, but these figurines are not the centre of interest.
